7 Creative Ways to Use Essential Oils That May Surprise You!

It’s no secret that essential oils have a range of benefits for our health and wellness - from stress relief to motivation and better sleep. But what about some of the lesser-known and more creative ways you can put essential oils to use?

From aromatherapy playdough to conditioning hair treatments, keep reading for 7 surprising (but incredibly useful!) things you can DIY at home using essential oils.

Essential oil shaving cream

Create your very own natural shaving cream with natural lubricants and hydrating essential oils! This simple shaving cream is ideal for a close, comfortable shave, while also moisturising and protecting your skin with nourishing shea butter.

You’ll need:

  • ⅓ cup shea butter
  • ⅓ cup coconut oil
  • ¼ cup fractionated coconut oil
  • 5 drops sandalwood oil
  • 5 drops peppermint oil
  • 5 drops melaleuca oil

Melt all ingredients (except for essential oils) together in a double boiler. Once melted, remove from heat and leave for 3 minutes. Add essential oils, stir until combined, and place the mixture in the fridge to cool until hard. Once hard, whip the shaving cream using a hand or stand mixer until light and fluffy, and store in an airtight container.

Essential oil headache relief

Need a quick solution to an unexpected headache? Lavender oil and peppermint oil can work together for a natural headache remedy. Simply fill a small roller bottle with fractionated coconut oil, and add 5 drops each of lavender and peppermint. Shake the mixture and roll it over your forehead, temples and neck as needed.

Essential oil foaming hand soap

Looking for a natural hand wash remedy? This easy foaming hand soap has the added bonus of immunity support, thanks to the antiviral and antibacterial properties of tea tree oil.

You’ll need:

  • 2 tablespoons unscented liquid castile soap
  • 1 tablespoon fractionated coconut oil
  • 5 drops tea tree oil
  • 5 drops peppermint oil

Add all ingredients to a small pump bottle. Slowly add water to the mixture, leaving enough room for the foaming pump. Add the lid and shake to mix well before use!

Essential oil insect repellent

Did you know essential oils can be used to keep creepy crawlies away from your home?

To repel crawling insects like ants, spiders and cockroaches, simply add some peppermint oil to a cotton ball and leave near entry points like doors and windows.

To repel mosquitoes, mix one drop each of citronella, eucalyptus and lemongrass oil with a teaspoon of fractionated coconut oil. Apply the mixture topically to exposed skin to keep pesky mozzies at bay!

Essential oil microwave cleaner

Store-bought microwave cleaners are usually filled with toxins and chemicals. This all-natural version will not only have your microwave sparkling clean, but also leave a fresh citrus scent.

You’ll need:

  • 1 cup white vinegar
  • 2 cups hot water
  • 15 drops lemon oil

Combine all ingredients in a glass spray bottle. Simply spray mixture inside the microwave and wipe residue away using a damp cloth.

Essential oil playdough

Create your very own fun and fragrant playdough using your favourite essential oils. Your little ones will love this sensory play experience!

You’ll need:

  • 2 cups flour
  • 2 cups coloured water
  • 1 cup salt
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 5 drops of your chosen essential oils

Combine all ingredients (except the essential oils) in a saucepan and stir well. Once combined, place on a medium heat and use a spatula to gently stir until a ball is formed. Be careful not to overcook, as this will create dry playdough. Remove from the heat, let cool on parchment paper, then knead essential oils into the mixture until thoroughly combined. Store in an airtight container and keep in the fridge in between uses!

Essential oil deep hair conditioner

This nourishing deep conditioner is perfect for dry, damaged hair - leaving your locks soft and silky smooth.

You’ll need:

  • 3 tablespoons coconut oil
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 8 drops essential oils (we recommend lavender, peppermint, rosemary, geranium and clary sage for their nourishing qualities).

Mix all ingredients together on a medium/high speed for five minutes or until a thick, creamy consistency is achieved. Apply the whipped mixture to clean, dry hair, using a wide tooth comb to distribute evenly. Let the treatment set for 20 minutes before washing and shampooing as normal. Repeat once a week for best results.
