Essential oil diffusers are one of our favourite ways to enjoy the benefits of aromatherapy. Not only do they look beautiful in the home or workplace, they can also be used to create a calm, positive environment.
If you’re just starting out with essential oils, you’re in the right place. Keep reading as we explain how to use an essential oil diffuser, including maintenance tips and our favourite diffuser blends for beginners.
How to choose an essential oil diffuser
The first step will be choosing the right essential oil diffuser for your needs.
Essential oil diffusers come in a variety of different styles, sizes and settings, including:
- Ultrasonic diffusers
- Handheld diffusers
- USB diffusers
- Banksia pod diffusers
To name a few! Diffusers each have their own unique settings - for example, some have LED light features, while others have the ability to connect to bluetooth and play music. Large diffusers are best for bigger spaces, while small diffusers work well for bedrooms or home offices. Ultrasonic diffusers are our top picks for beginners - but if you’re not sure where to start, read our guide on choosing the perfect essential oil diffuser here.
Where to put your essential oil diffuser
Once you’ve purchased an essential oil diffuser, you’ll then need to decide where to position it. There are a few things to keep in mind when choosing the location of your diffuser:
Make sure you choose a level, solid surface to prevent your diffuser from tipping or falling. We also recommend keep it out of reach of small children.
Think about the areas of the home where you spend the most time, such as bedrooms, living rooms or even office spaces. These rooms will benefit the most from an essential oil diffuser.
- Make sure your diffuser is close to an outlet if required. You should also avoid putting your diffuser directly next to a fan, and away from direct sunlight.
Step 1: Fill your diffuser with water
Once you’ve set-up your ultrasonic essential oil diffuser, you’ll need to fill it with water according to instructions. There should be a water line to guide you. Make sure you use clean tap water at room temperature, and be careful not to overfill or your diffuser may not work effectively.
Step 2: Add your oils
Now for the fun part - adding your essential oils!
Different oils are best suited for different situations - for example, lavender oil is best for calming and relaxing, while citrus oils are more energising and uplifting. You can even diffuse oils to reduce germs and improve immunity.
You can use a single oil or a blend of different oils in your diffuser - have some fun experimenting to find the perfect blend for your home. Check your diffuser instructions for the number of oil drops required.
The following diffuser blends are a great place to start:
- Lavender, Bergamot + Ylang Ylang
- Lavender, Rosemary + Lemon
- Peppermint + Frankincense
- Orange + Peppermint
- Frankincence + Sandalwood + Bergamot
Start slowly with just 3-4 drops of essential oils - remember, a little goes a long way!
Step 3: Choose your settings
Your diffuser will likely have different settings and time cycles for you to choose from. You can choose to run your diffuser continuously for around 15-20 minutes, or set it up to diffuser sporadically throughout the day, depending on when you’ll be using the space.
How to Clean and Maintain Your Essential Oil Diffuser
Make sure you look after your diffuser, too! Give the canister a quick clean after use with warm water, and then rinse and dry thoroughly before replacing.
