Which essential oils are best for cleaning?

Which essential oils are best suited for household cleaning products? Well, it really depends on what you’ll be using them for.

Some essential oils have antiviral and antibacterial properties, which make them ideal for disinfecting surfaces. 

The best essential oils for disinfecting include:

  • Lemon
  • Tea tree
  • Lime
  • Peppermint
  • Thyme

These oils have demonstrated the ability to kill various types of bacteria, mould and spores. 

When it comes to deodorising and purifying the air, the best essential oils would be: 

  • Lavender
  • Geranium
  • Clary sage 
  • Thyme
  • Tea tree

These oils help to cleanse and purify the air without the artificial fragrances you would usually find in store-bought products.

DIY Essential Oil Glass Cleaner:

Keep windows and surfaces looking sparkling clean with this simple essential oil spray.

You’ll need:

  • 1 ½ cup white vinegar 
  • ½ cup water
  • 8 x drops of lemon essential oil

Mix ingredients in a 500ml glass spray bottle and shake well. Spray onto glass surfaces and wipe with a paper towel or cloth.

DIY Essential Oil Air Freshener:

Freshen up your home without artificial fragrances using this natural remedy.

You’ll need:

  • Glass spray bottle filled with distilled water
  • 15 drops essential oils (we recommend a mix of lemon, grapefruit and wild orange)

Mix ingredients together and shake well. Spray throughout the home as needed.

DIY Essential Oil Toilet Cleaner:

Just a couple of ingredients are required for this all-natural toilet cleaner!

You’ll need:

  • Baking soda
  • Lemon oil

Simply sprinkle the baking soda and 2-3 drops of lemon oil into the toilet bowl and scrub as usual.

DIY Essential Oil Hand Sanitizer:

Antibacterial and antiviral oils can help you keep germs at bay, especially during the cold and flu season.

You’ll need:

  • Small glass bottle with cap or pump
  • ¼ cup Aloe vera gel
  • 1 tablespoon witch hazel
  • 5 drops lemon oil
  • 5 drops lavender oil
  • 15 drops tea tree oil

Mix ingredients together and shake well before use.

DIY Essential Oil Mildew Spray:

Damp corners of your home can be prone to mildew, especially in poorly lit areas. 

Create your own DIY mildew spray with:

  • 5 x drops of Lemon essential oil
  • 5 x drops of White Fir essential oil
  • 30ml water

Simply mix essential oils with water and store in a small glass spray bottle. Spray on any areas with mildew to kill the growth of mould.

DIY Essential Oil Garbage Bin Deodoriser:

Dealing with smelly rubbish bins?

You’ll need:

  • 5 x drops of your chosen deodorising essential oil (refer to the list above!)
  • 1 x tablespoon of baking powder

Combine the baking powder with the essential oil drops and sprinkle into your garbage bin to remove any lingering smells.

DIY Essential Oil Furniture Polish:

Spruce up your dining tables, cabinets and bedside tables with this simple essential oil furniture polish.

You’ll need:

  • 5 x drops of lemon essential oil or white Fir

Dab a dust cloth with a few drops of your chosen essential oil and gently polish your wooden furniture. 

DIY Essential Oil Carpet Cleaner:

Give your dusty, dirty carpets some love with this natural essential oil carpet cleaner.

You’ll need:

  • 1 x cup of baking soda
  • 20 x drops of lemon essential oil or cleansing blend

Mix baking soda with essential oil drops in a glass jar. Close jar tightly with lid, shake the mixture together and leave overnight. Once ready, sprinkle lightly over carpets and let sit for 15 minutes before vacuuming.
