Whether you’ve overindulged during the holidays or suffer from digestive issues in your everyday life, keep reading for some of the best essential oils to help relieve discomfort.

Which essential oils are best for digestive issues?

Certain essential oils are renowned for their abilities to assist with digestive issues and gut health.

Ginger oil is one of the best essential oils to use for digestive support. We usually think of ginger as being a great immunity booster for cold and flu, but the properties of ginger are also known to soothe upset stomachs and signs of nausea, as well as reducing uncomfortable bloating.

Peppermint oil is widely recommended for digestive health. Peppermint oil is a stimulant, so can help to encourage and stimulate the digestive process and get things moving the way they should! Peppermint oil can also be used to help with nausea, indigestion and gas.

Tarragon oil helps to promote the absorption of nutrients, which provides much-needed support for the digestive system. Tarragon helps to stimulate the secretion of digestive oils, which allows the stomach to break down the food you eat and improve the digestive process.

Clove oil is extremely soothing, which can help to reduce any inflammation that might be affecting your stomach lining and leading to sore stomach aches and belly pains. Clove is also known to help relieve the symptoms of bloating.

Fennel oil is known for its gut-healing properties, as well as its ability to help relax intestinal muscles to prevent gut spasms. It has also been suggested that fennel oil can help to relieve constipation and even eliminate bloating and gas through its unique properties.

Anise oil has been regarded for centuries as being a digestive agent, particularly after eating a heavy meal. Anise oil can also be used to help relieve indigestion.

DigestZen is one of our favourite doTERRA blends for healthy digestion, including a mix of ginger, fennel, coriander, peppermint, tarragon and anise.

The above essential oils can be used either topically, internally or via inhalation. It's important to ensure you use only the highest quality essential oils when applying to the skin or ingesting.

To use the essential oils topically, simply mix a couple of drops of your chosen essential oil with a carrier oil like coconut oil, and massage gently into the abdomen.

To use the essential oils internally, dilute 2-3 drops of your chosen essential oil into a teaspoon of honey, and mix this with a glass of warm water.

To use the essential oils through inhalation, simply add 10 drops to your diffuser and allow yourself to breathe in the oils as they are dispersed.
