Lemon oil is one of the most popular oils worldwide, for good reason. Lemon oil is renowned for its cleansing, purifying and invigorating properties, and can be used for everything from mood boosting and motivation, to household cleaning and digestion.

If you’re interested in learning more about lemon oil, keep reading for 8 amazing ways to put it to use!

Natural cleaning spray

Lemon oil is one of the best oils for chemical-free cleaning, while also offering antibacterial protection.

You can make your very own natural household cleaner by mixing ¼ cup of white vinegar, 1 ½ cups distilled water and 25 drops of lemon oil in a spray bottle.

Simply shake to combine to create an everyday cleaning spray for counters, benchtops and other surfaces!

Detox and digestion

Lemon oil is known for its strong cleansing and regenerating properties, making it the perfect essential oil for detoxing the body.

Simply add 2 drops of high-quality lemon oil to a glass of cool water and drink daily. This routine can also help to soothe digestive issues like bloating, discomfort and constipation.

Mood-boosting and motivation

Nothing quite compares to the uplifting aroma of lemon oil!

This fresh citrus oil is the perfect natural pick-me-up, helping to improve your mood while also improving mental clarity and motivation. Add a few drops of lemon oil to your essential oil diffuser, and use daily to create an uplifting home environment.

Natural skincare

Lemon oil can help to nourish and hydrate dry or damaged skin, while also assisting with the prevention of acne. This versatile oil is known widely for having strong antioxidant properties, making it one of the best anti-aging oils for skin care, too.

For a nourishing face oil, fill a small glass bottle with 1.5 teaspoons of jojoba oil, 5 drops of lemon oil, and 5 drops of geranium oil. Massage gently into the skin each night after cleansing.

You can also use lemon oil to fight blackheads by creating a paste with 1 teaspoon of baking soda, 1 drop of lemon oil and 1 teaspoon of honey. After steaming your face with warm water, apply the paste to blackhead affected areas and wash off after 10 minutes!

Eliminate odours

The strong citrus scent and antibacterial properties of lemon oil can help to eliminate unwanted odours around the home.

Simply add a few drops of lemon oil to a spray bottle of distilled water for a cleansing room spray. Or, place an essential oil diffuser in the areas of your home that require the most refreshing, and diffuse lemon oil routinely throughout the day.

Strengthen nails

Lemon oil can help to strengthen weak or brittle nails when used daily. Massage lemon oil gently into your cuticles and over the surface of each nail to help strengthen their condition.

Fight cold and flu

Lemon oil is antibacterial and antiviral, making it helpful to keep handy for cold and flu season. When you start to feel symptoms of a cold, add 3 drops of lemon oil to a bowl of warm water and inhale for 10 minutes with a towel covering the head. This can help to ease blocked sinuses and sore throats.

Freshen laundry

Adding lemon oil to your laundry not only helps to freshen your clothes, but can also remove mildew and unwelcome smells. Simply add a few drops to your favourite detergent before washing!

What are Negative Ions and How do They Improve our Wellbeing?

What are negative ions

We often talk about the benefits of Himalayan salt lamps on our Inspire Me Naturally blog, with one key benefit being their ability to generate negative ions for the surrounding environment.

But do you know exactly what negative ions actually are, and how they work to improve our wellbeing?

Today on the blog we’re talking about how negative ions are formed, why they’re important, and the benefits they have on our health and wellness!

First things first – what is an ion?

An ion is essentially an electrically charged molecule, formed when atoms either lose or gain an electron. This happens due to environmental or atmospheric influences.

Ions are all around us, and can directly influence our mood, wellbeing and even in some cases our health.

There are two types of ions – negative ions, and positive ions. These ions are formed in different ways, and have different impacts on our bodies.

What is the difference between a negative and positive ion?

Don’t be fooled by the names – a positive ion (or positively charged ion) is actually known for having a negative effect on the body when we have a high exposure to them.

Positive ions are often formed in nature due to humidity, extreme wind and pollution, but are also generated through electrical equipment like fluorescent lighting, air-conditioning, televisions and even our computers and mobile phones.

When we find ourselves in environments with high levels of these positive ions (like a stuffy office with fluorescent lights) we can start to feel anxious, irritable, tired and tense.

On the flipside, negative ions have the complete opposite effect, with a positive impact on our health and wellbeing.

Negative ions are most commonly found in nature near waterfalls, forests and the ocean. At home, they’re also produced in your very own shower! There’s a reason why most people find themselves feeling fresh and energised in these kinds of locations – the negative ions help to counteract the positive ions, and provide a better surrounding environment.

Himalayan salt lamps are also purported to release negative ions as the crystal is heated by an internal lamp. Negative ions are naturally attracted to pollutants like dust and allergens, and their negative charge means they can actually attach to and remove these pollutants from the air.

How do negative ions benefit our health and wellness?

There are several benefits to being exposed to negative ions in our everyday lives. Negative ions are reported to help with:

  • Purifying the air and therefore reducing allergy symptoms
  • Improving respiratory issues and preventing respiratory illnesses
  • Mental clarity – feeling energised, alert and refreshed
  • Decreasing the number of airborne bacteria
  • Reducing headaches
  • Improving sleeping patterns

Just to name a few! This is why products like Himalayan salt lamps are so popular around the home, particularly in areas where we are often exposed to positive ions due to electrical equipment, dust or pet allergens.

How to use essential oils safely for kids health!

How to use essential oils safely for kids health

Being responsible for our kid’s health and wellbeing can feel like a lot of pressure at times! We all want to do what’s best for our kids, whether they are having trouble sleeping, feeling unwell, or struggling to concentrate at school. It can be hard knowing where to turn when it comes to wellness for our kids. This is where essential oils come in!

We’ve now learnt exactly how beneficial it is to opt for natural products and remedies where possible, and avoiding toxic substances and harsh chemicals where we can. Essential oils are 100% natural, and can be a great addition to the household when it comes to the health and wellbeing of our kids.

If you do decide to introduce essential oils into your kid’s routines, it’s important to be informed as to how to use them safely, and which essential oils are best suited for different situations. Read on for our top tips on using essential oils for your kid’s health, and our recommendations to get you started!

Which essential oils are safe for kids?

Some essential oils are more potent than others. The following essential oils are considered some of the safest and most beneficial to use around children:

*Lavender oil: best for calming, relaxing and assisting with better sleep.

*On Guard oil: best for immunity and protection against bacteria and airborne germs.

*Patchouli oil: best for skin issues, redness and moisturizing dry skin

*Frankincense oil: another anti-bacterial oil that can also assist with healing cuts and scars

*Chamomile oil: best for aiding digestion and ear infections

*Breathe oil: best for respiratory health and clearing the airways

*Peppermint oil: best for cooling fevers and helping with cold and flu symptoms (not suitable for children under 6).

How to use essential oils around kids safely?

When it comes to using essential oils for kids health, there are a few different ways to explore their benefits safely.

Diffusing essential oils: One of the most popular ways to use essential oils around kids is by diffusing them throughout the home using a diffuser or vaporiser. Diffusing your essential oils allows them to become diluted through the volume of air in the room, meaning they will only be inhaled sporadically and in small doses.

You might choose to create your own essential oil blends for different scenarios – one for bedtime, one for winter to prevent illness, one for concentrating while completing homework. Make sure you adjust the dosage on your diffuser by reducing the time and frequency to make them more child-friendly.

Topical application: Essential oils can also be applied topically, but it’s important to dilute them with an oil like coconut oil. Children’s skin is much more sensitive than adult skin, so any essential oils will need to be diluted accordingly. You could create a diluted blend in a roller bottle and apply directly to the bottom of the feet, or simply mix a couple of drops with some coconut oil and massage into the skin with your hands.

If you struggle with finding natural products and remedies for your kids, essential oils are the perfect all-natural solution to keep handy around the home. Just make sure you only use the highest quality, pure essential oils that are known to be safe around children, and take care when diffusing or applying topically by diluting them appropriately.
